A word about the city of Tlaxcala: Founded in 1522 by the Spanish, Tlaxcala was intended to be the regional center of governance and evangelization. The second largest diocese in Mexico, Tlaxcala's population grew to about 300,000 at its peak before an outbreak of smallpox wiped out a large part of its population. As a result, neighboring Puebla took over as the regional powerhouse. Today, Tlaxcala is a peaceful colonial town with beautiful colonial architecture and the capital of a state that deserves to be discovered.
